GO, AND DO THOU LIKEWISE
RETURN TO POEM LIST

THE MAN IN THE DITCH
IN LUKE CHAPTER TEN
WAS A PICTURE OF MY LIFE
WASTED BY SIN.

ROBBED AND WOUNDED,
AND LEFT TO ROT.
DECEIVED BY THE DEVIL
IN HIS WICKED PLOT.

THE END WAS DEATH,
THOUGH THE WAY SEEMED RIGHT.
ALONE ON LIFE'S ROAD,
I WAS TOO WEAK TO FIGHT.

MY VERY FIRST HOPE
WAS A PASSING PRIEST.
LATER I'D FIND,
HE CARED THE LEAST.

A LEVITE CAME
WITH JUDGMENTAL EYE,
BUT SOON HE LEFT
WITH A HEARTLESS SIGH.

OTHERS TOO
PASSED BY ON THAT ROAD:
SOME TOO BUSY,
AND SOME TOO COLD.

SOME WITH MUCH MONEY,
BUT NONE TO SPEND
TO HELP A POOR SINNER
WHO'S AT HIS END.

SOME WITH GREAT SMARTS,
AND YET TOO DUMB
TO REMEMBER THE DITCH
HE HAD COME FROM.

SOME WITH DEGREES
AND HONORS MUCH;
TOO GOOD AND TOO GREAT
THIS OLD SINNER TO TOUCH.

THANK GOD, THERE WAS ONE
WHO CAME WHERE I LAY,
COULD HAVE GONE BY;
BUT DECIDED TO STAY.

BOUND UP MY WOUNDS
AND POURED IN SOME OIL;
THOUGH IT MEANT TIME,
LABOR, AND TOIL.

HE WALKED, WHILE I RODE,
ON DOWN TO THE INN.
HE THEN PAID THE PRICE
TO RESTORE ME FROM SIN.

'TWAS JESUS THAT DAY,
WHO CAME DOWN THAT ROAD:
WAS MADE AS A MAN
TO CARRY MY LOAD.

HIS BLOOD WAS THE MONEY
THAT PAID FOR THE INN;
AND RESTORED WHAT I LOST
WHEN ROBBED BY MY SIN.

THANK GOD SOMEONE STOPPED!
THANK GOD SOMEONE CARED!
THANK GOD SOMEONE SAW ME,
AND HELPED ME THEY DARED!

NOW, I AGAIN AM ON THAT ROAD
LOOKING FOR A MAN
WHO'S BEEN ROBBED, DECEIVED,
AND WOUNDED, BY SATAN'S EVIL PLAN

NOW I TOO TAKE A DONKEY,
SOME OIL AND SOME WINE;
SO I TOO CAN BIND UP WOUNDS
AS JESUS BOUND UP MINE.

I TAKE THEM TO THE SAME OLD INN
WHERE JESUS LIFTED ME.
AND THERE THEY COME TO MEET MY LORD,
AND FROM THEIR SINS BE FREE!

YOU TOO, MY FRIEND, WAS LIFTED ONCE
FROM THE DITCH OF SATAN'S PLAN
WHY DON'T YOU FIND A DONKEY,
GO HELP SOME OTHER MAN!
